Our Story & Crew

From our deep love for the ocean to the creation of Wild Pacific Whale Watch, our journey is rooted in passion, purpose, and a commitment to unforgettable marine experiences.

OUR BEGINNING

A Vision Born from the Sea

With a lifelong connection to the ocean and a shared passion for marine wildlife, Captain John Mayer and Britt Simon have built careers rooted in exploration, education, and conservation—offering some of the most memorable and meaningful whale watching experiences along the California coast.

In 2025, their vision came full circle with the creation of Wild Pacific Whale Watch—a San Diego-based company founded not just on experience, but on deep-rooted passion. This venture isn’t just a new chapter—it’s the culmination of decades spent on the water, and a dream realized.

Captain John Mayer
CEO/President

Captain John Mayer, a Monterey native and U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain, began his maritime journey in 1995. From commercial fishing to marine research and ecotourism, his career spans nearly three decades and reflects the full spectrum of ocean life.

As the co-owner and operator of a successful whale watching company in Monterey, John has earned a reputation for excellence in seamanship, hospitality, and responsible wildlife viewing. His calm leadership and deep knowledge of the Pacific make every trip safe, smooth, and unforgettable.

Britt Simon
Chief Operations Officer

Britt Simon brings a vibrant mix of marine science, public outreach, and business expertise. With a background in marine biology and environmental education, she’s held key operational and leadership roles at whale watching companies in both Monterey and San Diego.

Whether training staff, managing logistics, or leading tours as a naturalist, Britt is known for her engaging storytelling, scientific insight, and heartfelt connection to the ocean.

MEET THE HEARTBEAT

The People Behind the Passion

Together, John and Britt form a powerful team—uniting expert navigation, operational excellence, and enthusiastic education. They’ve built Wild Pacific Whale Watch with one goal in mind: to ignite the same sense of wonder in others that has driven their own lifelong dedication to the sea.

This isn’t just a business. It’s a lifestyle. A calling. A joy.

At Wild Pacific, we don’t just show you whales—we share the heart of what we love. Every tour is led by a crew handpicked for their experience, passion, and genuine care for both people and wildlife. Whether it’s your first time seeing a blue whale or your hundredth, we’re here to make it unforgettable.

Meet Melissa Bridges

LEAD NATURALIST & GUEST EXPERIENCE DIRECTOR
Founding crew member of Wild Pacific Whale Watch

Hi! I’m Melissa—your onboard marine biologist, whale watching naturalist, and ocean enthusiast.

I earned my degree in Marine Biology from the University of San Diego and have spent years exploring the incredible marine ecosystems along Southern California’s coast. Whether it’s blue whales gliding past the bow, dolphins riding the wake, or seabirds soaring overhead, I believe every moment on the water is an opportunity to connect people more deeply with the ocean.

As Lead Naturalist and Guest Experience Director, I bring both science and storytelling to life on every trip. But my role with Wild Pacific Whale Watch runs even deeper. As one of the founding team members, I’ve been part of shaping our mission from the very beginning—ensuring that every tour is grounded in passion, purpose, and genuine care for our guests and marine wildlife alike.

I’m especially passionate about inspiring curiosity and conservation—whether through up-close wildlife encounters, educational narration, or encouraging the next generation to protect our oceans. When I’m not out on the water, you’ll find me leading beach cleanups, surfing, or volunteering to support local marine research.

Whale watching should be fun, approachable, and unforgettable—and I’m here to make sure your experience is just that. So bring your questions, your sense of wonder (and maybe a windbreaker!), and I’ll bring the knowledge, enthusiasm, and a few dolphin puns.

Let’s make some FINtastic memories together!

His deep knowledge of San Diego’s waters and marine wildlife is unmatched, making him a trusted guide and skilled mariner for every adventure.

With years of experience working alongside marine biologists, the American Cetacean Society, and the San Diego Natural History Museum, Captain Quinn combines science, safety, and storytelling to offer our guests a one-of-a-kind experience on the water. He’s known for creating a safe, smooth, and educational trip—where passenger safety is always the top priority.

When he’s not at the helm, you’ll find him surfing, golfing, or spending time with his two beloved Boston Terriers. But his favorite moments are on the water—especially when guests are lit up with excitement about the ocean and its amazing wildlife.
