Today was one for the record books aboard The Peregrine. On our morning trip, we were absolutely delighted — and stunned — to encounter not one, but two sperm whales off the coast of San Diego. Sperm whales are among the rarest sightings in our waters. Known as the largest of the toothed whales, males can grow up to 60 feet long and dive for more than an hour at a time in search of deep-sea squid. For our Captain Quinn and much of our crew, seeing a sperm whale has always been a bucket-list dream — and today was the very first time we’ve ever experienced it. Truly unforgettable. Alongside this historic moment, we also enjoyed the company of about 75 Long-Beaked Common Dolphins, playful as ever and surfing along the bow.

Afternoon Trip: Dramatic Displays The excitement continued into the afternoon, where guests were treated to a tail-lobbing humpback whale putting on dramatic displays — tail throws, tail slaps, and plenty of splashing to delight everyone on board. We also spotted one Minke whale and not one, but two separate pods of Short-Beaked Common Dolphins, totaling around 150 individuals. A Day to Remember From the ultra-rare sighting of sperm whales to the playful energy of dolphins and the powerful displays of a humpback, today reminded us why no two trips are ever the same. The Pacific always has surprises in store, and September 7th will forever stand out as one of our most memorable days at sea.
