San Diego gave us another once-in-a-lifetime gift this weekend — sperm whales for the second weekend in a row! These giants are rarely seen in our waters, so to encounter them on back-to-back weekends is truly extraordinary. Morning Trip: Close Encounters Far West from La Jolla On our morning trip, we spotted two male sperm whales surfacing far west from La Jolla. They came in remarkably close, and guests even got to listen in with our hydrophone, hearing the powerful series of clicks these whales use to communicate and hunt. One whale surfaced near our port bow, fluked down, and lingered with clear curiosity — a majestic and humbling experience for everyone aboard. Afternoon Trip: Even More Magic The pair resurfaced on the afternoon trip, giving us another chance to witness their sheer size and power. This time, we had our drone videographer Sean on board, capturing stunning footage and unique perspectives from above. Guests enjoyed incredible looks from every angle, making the experience even more memorable. Why It’s So Special Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales, capable of growing up to 60 feet long and diving more than 3,000 feet deep. Their preference for offshore, deep-water habitats makes them incredibly rare to spot near San Diego. Seeing them two weekends in a row — and capturing it on drone video — is nothing short of remarkable.
