This afternoon aboard The Peregrine, our adventure started with a burst of energy — about 100 playful long-beaked common dolphins surfing our wake and bow-riding alongside us. We even spotted plenty of tiny calves sticking close to their mothers, giving us the sweetest welcome to our trip.

Word soon came over the radio from our whale-watching friends: a possible blue whale in the area. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but we decided to make a run for it — and it paid off! We arrived to find the towering spout of the world’s largest animal. For several breathtaking minutes, the blue whale surfaced just off our port bow, taking short three-minute dives and gliding gracefully beside us. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

On the way home, the surprises kept coming. About 25 Risso’s dolphins appeared — a rare treat for San Diego! With their tall, falcate dorsal fins and distinctive white scarring, they’re unlike any other dolphins we see.

At our furthest point today, we were 18 miles offshore — proving once again that at Wild Pacific Whale Watch, we really do go the extra mile.
